What’s is a cruise to Alaska like?
You may be surprised to hear this, but I took a cruise to Alaska about 10 years ago. I’ve lived in Skagway, Alaska for 23 years, so this may seem odd, but man do I love Alaska. I said to myself, “Self, where is the number-one place I would like to travel this year?” The answer? Alaska. So, I booked a cruise to Southeast Alaska on the Norwegian Pearl and that was that. Now I am going to tell you what a cruise to Alaska is like. How very nice of me!
Cruising is fun because you are like the king
The cruise ship crew members do everything for you. I ordered a club sandwich from my cabin at 3 am simply because I could. It didn’t cost any extra. I ate the whole thing too. Probably because I had been drinking since 7 pm. When I walked into the dining room, someone sprayed my hands with disinfectant. I was afraid to use the restroom because I figured someone would help me with that too! But then I had to go. Don’t worry, I was able to do that without someone trying to help.
What my cruise to Alaska was like
My cruise on the Norwegian Pearl left from Seattle. There were stops in Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway (woot!), Victoria B. C., and Glacier Bay. I flew down to Seattle and got on the ship. It was a very large ship with many things to do. Some crew member tried to sell me some jewelry and another tried to sell me some art. I wasn’t interested. Then a bartender tried to sell me a martini and he was successful.
The first two days were at sea. I got into a poker tournament on the first day and won 1,600 bucks. Pretty awesome! I wish I could tell you I’m some great poker player but the other players were just really bad. I saw a show that night with some dancers and then saw a comedy show. I can’t remember what I did the next day. It was 10 years ago!
The ports on my cruise to Alaska
In Ketchikan, I went on a rainforest walking tour and saw some trees and plants and stuff. Very interesting. I walked along Creek Street and talked to some friendly locals. I know a lot of people there. They were confused about why I was on a cruise. Because I love Alaska!
In Juneau, I went ziplining. That was fun. Some 84-year-old lady was doing it. She had a fear of heights her whole life and she was using this opportunity to get over it. She did. I liked that lady.
In Skagway, I was going to go by my house and water the garden but I ran into my boss and he made me go to work. After work, I was really happy to get back on the ship. I ate some fancy french snails that night. They were delicious. I will eat anything.
In Glacier Bay, I saw the Marjorie Glacier. It was amazing. After that, we cruised up the West Arm of Glacier Bay toward the John Hopkins Glacier. Everyone was crowded around the rail taking photos. I put on my swim trunks and jumped in the Jacuzzi by myself. I ordered a mango daiquiri and told the girl to keep them coming. Someone I met on the ship said, “Aren’t you going to come see the glacier?”
Nope.
Victoria was very beautiful. I watched some street performers and drank beer at a sidewalk cafe. There was a guy dressed as Darth Vader playing a violin. Canada is weird.
My final thoughts on my cruise to Alaska
I sailed back to Seattle and had a day in the city before flying back to Skagway. It happened to be the International Cheese Festival weekend, proving I’m the luckiest guy in the world. I also found a bar where they spun a big wheel every 30 minutes. Each space on the wheel was a drink special. It landed on $2.50 martinis so I stayed there for a while. I ate a bunch of onion rings and sang songs with the locals. It was quite the scene. I’m good at making new friends.
Go on a cruise to Alaska. It’s super great. For next year’s vacation, I’m going to travel to Alaska again. It’s really the best place on Earth.
