What is a Skagway Adventure Tour?
If you travel, you’ve undoubtedly seen your fair share of “adventure tours.” In today’s blog, we are going to talk about Skagway adventure tours and try to figure out what exactly “adventure” actually means.
What is an adventure?
Let’s start with this simple question. An adventure is defined as “an unusual and exciting, typically hazardous, experience or activity.” However, this definition makes it sound like your Skagway tour could be dangerous. Tour companies don’t like to put their customers at risk, so you have to find a different definition to understand the context.
The Mirriam-Webster dictionary also defines adventure as “an exciting or remarkable experience.” This definition better describes a Skagway adventure tour. And how about Mirriam and Webster? They sure are good at defining words. I appreciate that.
I had an adventure once
I think of adventure as something out of the ordinary but also with a taste of excitement. I went on vacation to Panama a few years ago. Tours of the Panama Canal are very popular but they all looked super BORING to me. Sitting in a covered boat with 15 other people taking pictures of a manmade canal for 4 hours doesn’t interest me in the slightest.
However, I saw a Panana Canal tour that included an overnight stay on a houseboat deep in the jungle. The tour also featured a nighttime wildlife excursion using spotlights to find glowing animal eyes and then chasing them with a boat. It was called the Panama Canal Adventure Tour. “Now that sounds like an adventure!” I thought.
Let me tell you, I wasn’t wrong. Just before the nighttime wildlife tour started, the guide decided to pound an entire bottle of Jack Daniels. Then he took me out in his rickety boat, which was equipped with an intermittently functional motor.
At one point I saw green glowing eyes in my spotlight, so the tour guide sped toward them at full throttle. He stopped the boat near the shore, reached into the water, caught a baby crocodile and held it out toward my pants, ranting like a maniac about the dangers of the jungle. I thought he was going to kill me. Then things got weird.
All in all, it ended up being a memorable experience and definitely qualified as an adventure.
In Skagway, our tour guides are not raving lunatics
Your Skagway adventure tour will be nothing like my Panama tour. Your adventure will be memorable without risking life and limb because of a tour guide at risk of mental breakdown. In fact, tour operators in Skagway go the extra mile to ensure your safety and every guide is well trained, friendly, and well adjusted.
Some examples of Skagway adventure tours
What follows are a few of our Skagway adventure tours. If you like a tour with a little pizazz, you’re going to like these options.
Ocean Raft Wildlife Adventure – You get on a fast boat with a fun crew and speed around looking for wildlife. Super fun! They give you an expensive survival suit to wear so you’re always safe and you look cool in your Instagram photos. I did not get a survival suit in Panama. I was wearing shorts, bug repellent, and a look of abject fear.
Glacier Discovery by Helicopter – Take a chopper tour over a bunch of glaciers and then land on one and look around. You are standing on a giant hunk of ice in the Alaskan wilderness! That’s some serious adventure. It sure beats having a crocodile used against you as a weapon.
Zipline at Grizzly Falls – You probably know what a zipline is. This tour is adventurous without getting too crazy. Imagine a Panama Canal tour in a boat that works.
Glacier Point Wilderness Safari – When you hear the word “safari” you know you’re in for an adventure. This tour features a canoe trip to a glacier in the remote Alaskan wilderness. Pretty exciting stuff. You will probably see wild animals and thoroughly enjoy your adventure. They even give you a snack. On my Panama tour, I was only offered Jack Daniels for a snack.
Take a Skagway adventure tour and live the good life
After Panama, I’m pretty much done with adventure. From now on, I plan on staying home and living vicariously through other people’s Instagram photos. But don’t let my fear of adventure stop you from going hog wild. Take an adventure tour in Skagway and enjoy an experience you will treasure forever.
