The best Skagway shore excursions for kids
Modern travelers aren’t afraid to take their kids on vacation. Alaska cruise ships are often full of multi-child families hoping to experience the wonders of unspoiled nature. This presents a set of unique challenges because the Alaska tour industry didn’t cater to children until recently. It was just a few short years ago when cruises were considered the perfect vacation for retirees, but that concept has radically changed. Today, cruise ship companies market heavily to families, but it can be difficult finding Skagway shore excursions for kids. Until now.
It’s important to understand what your kids like
What do most kids like nowadays? Mostly, they like staring into their cell phones, so it’s important to find tours that will gather their attention. Keep in mind that cell service is not available on many Skagway tours, which could cause them to go into immediate smartphone withdrawals. This is why you need to be aware of your children’s interests and book a tour that will ignite their imagination.
Deciding what Skagway shore excursions for kids are best for you
Do your kids like animals? Do they like hiking? Are they interested in history? Answering these questions will help determine the best Skagway shore excursions for kids – your kids. You must also be aware of their mood. Your kids may get out of bed on the morning of your tour and hate life. You can’t help that but it could put a damper on an otherwise perfect day. Weather may also play a role in determining their mood. If you’re from Florida and it’s 40 degrees when you get off of your cruise ship, your kids need appropriate clothing or they’re going to start whining.
Skagway shore excursions for kids we recommend
These are the tours we most recommend to families. Your kids are unique, so you should talk to them about what they want to do while in Alaska.
Mushers Camp Dog Sledding Tour – Kids love dogs and this family-friendly tour lets them pet puppies and ride on a cart pulled by Alaskan huskies. At three and a half hours it’s not very long so your kids shouldn’t have a meltdown from being without their phone for too long. They can also send out some snaps to their friends holding the puppies. Win-win! This tour is suitable for all ages.
Helicopter Dogsled Tour – This is similar to the tour above but you get to ride in a real dog sled on the snow. To reach the snow, you take a helicopter to a glacier and that is pretty awesome. Most kids will love this tour but it may not be in everyone’s budget. If you want to take this tour, book early because it is always sold out. Good for all ages.
Ocean Raft Wildlife Adventure – If your kids like speed, this may be the tour for them. These high-powered rafts go fast and the driver will do 360s. You will also likely see a bunch of animals in the wild, like seals and eagles. This tour is good for kids age 8 and up.
The White Pass Train – Many younger kids love trains, especially if they’re into that Harry Potter stuff. Some kids hate trains so you want to be sure whether your kids qualify for the former or the latter. The train features tunnels, trestles, and other trainy things that kids dig. Good for all ages but especially young kids.
Klondike Gold Fields – This is arguably the most family-friendly tour in Skagway. There is a lot to do at the Klondike Gold Fields, including gold panning and the Alaskan husky sled dog demonstration. The tour is also affordable and can be customized in a variety of ways. Think of it as a mini-Disney in Alaska and you’re on the right track.
