The 2018 Skagway
Year in Review
Wow. It sure was a crazy year. It seems like only a year ago we were ushering in 2018. Now it’s about to be 2019, which means it’s a good time to reflect on the last 12 months. Welcome to the first-ever 2018 Skagway Year in Review!
2018 was filled with days, weeks, and months
2018 started on Jan. 1st and it was the first of 365 days and nights. We had weather on every single one of those days. Sometimes it was sunny. Other days it rained. More than once, the wind blew. There was snow and icy rain too. The weather was unpredictable but without it, we wouldn’t have much to talk about at the Post Office.
It was winter when 2018 began. Spring came next, then summer. Fall followed along and we closed out the year with winter. All five seasons brought surprises we will never forget. Hold on. Five seasons? I was always taught there were four seasons in a year, but we get two winters every year. Confusing. I never really thought about it until now.
Highlights of our 2018 in Skagway Alaska
What are the memories we will most… uh… remember? Let’s pick one from each month.
January 2018 – Highlights of January were watching NFL playoffs at the Elks lodge and that time avocados were on sale for $3 each at the store. What really set the sale apart was how the avocados only had small rotten areas inside. Glorious.
February 2018 – Who could forget those 28 days we call February. I was on vacation so I don’t know what was going on in Skagway, but I read about a dog killing someone’s chickens in the Police Blotter. Magical.
March 2018 – Even though it was still cold in March, seasonal workers starting rolling into town. They were tan and in a real chipper mood, saying things like, “How was your winter?” Then we enjoyed another Buckwheat Ski Classic. I can’t ski very well, but the Aid Station had hot dogs and I drank some whiskey.
April 2018 – I’m sure April happened but nothing really stands out. I’m guessing it got more crowded around town and I got my fishing gear ready for the weekends.
May 2018 – This marked the start of the summer tourist season. Cruise ships docked, tourists disembarked, and then some of them dodged falling debris from the Death Rock of Doom. Remember that? Crazy.
June 2018 – June was all about fishing. How can we ever forget that nice trout I caught in Tutshi Lake or the quality pike fishing in Atlin. Remember that day I limited out in less than an hour? Those are memories we will share forever. In Skagway, I think there was a road race, a few bikes were stolen, and some locals enjoyed family barbeques.
July 2018 through December 2018 – The rest of the year was kind of a blur. We had a great employee dinner for M&M Tours at Starfire. I went to the Elks Convention. Then all of sudden it was Christmas and here we are.
Let’s make 2019 12 months filled with about 30 days apiece!
Let’s make 2019 just as unforgettable as 2018. From all of us at M&M Tours here in Skagway, Happy New Year!
