Skagway tour spotlight
Zipline at Grizzly Falls
Some tourists want to see some of Skagway’s beautiful nature when they visit. Others want to do something exciting because they have a spirit of adventure. Then there are those who want both. If you’re the kind of person that likes thrills but also wants to immerse yourself in Alaska’s primeval beauty, the Zipline at Grizzly Falls offers the best of both worlds. Let’s take a look at this amazing Skagway tour in today’s blog.
More than just another zipline
According to me, the Zipline at Grizzly Falls is the best ziplining tour in the entire State of Alaska. Why? Because you are completely immersed in the beauty of Alaska’s coastal rain forest. Anybody can zipline from one tree to another, but how many people can say they’ve ziplined over spectacular waterfalls in the heart of the Tongass National Forest. Not many, that’s for sure.
The Zipline at Grizzly Falls boasts 11 ziplines. You read that right. ELEVEN! That’s more ziplines than most people ever imagined possible, and it makes for nonstop adrenaline-pumping excitement. You will also walk over 4 suspension bridges. That’s a whole lot of fun packed into one four-hour adventure. The question is, can your heart handle thrills of this magnitude?
The Ziplines are RAD
The Ziplines at Grizzly Falls are super rad because they have various names to describe their unique thrill. The longest zipline is 750 feet long, allowing you to achieve speeds of 45 miles per hour if you’re not a big chicken. If you are a big chicken, you can use the handbrake to slow you down, but that’s not quite as rad. 750 feet is longer than 2 football fields, and even Tom Brady can’t throw that far unless he deflates the football. Pretty amazing stuff!
The zipline harnesses allow you to spin and do flips and rotate, but only if you’re 100 percent rad and just like to get crazy. As you zip at high speed over glacially fed waterfalls, you will feel the mist in your face. Pretty wild!
The suspension bridges are “state of the art”
What does that mean? I’m not really sure, but you walk across them and the view is SICK! Most ziplines are just zipping along from one tree to another, but suspension bridges offer a change of pace and allow you to take some great photos of the rain forest. You can take pictures on the zipline too, but don’t drop your camera!
You may see a grizzly bear but not on the zipline
The Zipline at Grizzly Falls is in Dyea, which is about a 30-minute drive from Skagway. When the salmon are running, grizzly bears are often spotted on the tidal flats near the zipline tour’s entrance. Don’t worry though, the bears don’t like to stray into the tour area, which is a good thing. Can you imagine a tour where you zipline over hungry grizzly bears jumping up to try and make you their next meal? Sounds a little too rad.
Is ziplining safe?
You bet it is! The company goes to great lengths to make sure you are securely fastened into your harness. If people were falling out of trees and getting hurt all the time, the tour company wouldn’t be in business. You will also wear a helmet and have your own highly trained guide. In other words, you’ll be safe. If you’re still scared, consider the fact that you drive on the highways and Interstates where you live. Last year, there were about 50,000 highway fatalities in the United States. There were zero on the Zipline at Grizzly Falls. If you’re too scared to zipline, you better stop driving too!
I almost forgot about the unimog
A unimog is this crazy transport with giant tires that looks like something out of an Alien movie. You get to ride on a unimog to access the zipine course. This is great because the unimog is cool and walking uphill is bogus.
