Skagway Restaurant Review
Part 4
The Station Bar & Grill
I’m not the smartest guy in the world but I know where to shovel in the food. I like a good, old-fashioned burger, pizza, and other meals that are easy to spell and undeniably American. There are plenty of Skagway restaurants with good food but when I just want to stuff my maw with something that would make Normal Rockwell feel like a card-carrying communist, I eat at the Station Bar & Grill.
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, because that’s when we eat!
The Station serves three squares a day because that’s how we eat in this country. After eating all of that fancy French food on the cruise ship, you’re going to want something that makes you full. Did you know that the escargot you ate at the Captain’s table is snails? That’s right. You ate bait.
When you get off of the cruise ship you’re going to want something that reminds you that you’re in America (Yes, Alaska is part the United States), so let’s check out the menu and get ‘er dun.
Breakfast is the only way to start your day
The Station, as the locals call it, serves a full breakfast menu. You can get an omelet, eggs Benedict, or just a massive pile of bacon with pancakes and authentic Log Cabin maple-flavored syrup. They also have an Irish eggs Benedict, which includes corned beef hash and you probably want to eat that.
My favorite breakfast dish at the Station is the chicken fried steak. I like my eggs over-easy served right on the top of the steak already smothered in white-flavored gravy. Then I break the yolks and it goes running all over it so I can mop it up with toast. That’s how it’s done, folks.
You could drink orange juice with your black coffee or some other such nonsense, but the Station has a full bar. Try an Irish coffee and cut to the chase.
Lunch is the meal where you start thinking about dinner
Lunch at the Station is served when breakfast is over. Menu highlights include a delicious 14” pizza with your choice of toppings. There are even some “alternative” sauces for the weirdos in your group, although I have to admit the Alfredo sauce is pretty good. They even have a “Hipster Pizza” for people from California.
Next, come the burgers. I recommend the double bacon cheeseburger because it’s the only burger that’s even in my wheelhouse. Other highlights include halibut fish and chips, hot wings, and a corn dog basket. You read that right – a corn dog BASKET! That’s two corn dogs served with fries because you know one corn dog is a horrible tease. I like my corn dogs with yellow mustard because I have good taste.
Wash it all down with a cold Budweiser and feel good about your choices in life.
Dinner is when things get crazy
The first thing you see on the Station’s dinner menu is “cheesy bread,” and that’s when you know that all of your wildest dreams are about to come true. Then you notice nachos and mozzarella sticks, realize you’re still in the appetizer section and wish you were wearing your fat pants.
One night a week, the Station has prime rib. If you’re not there for prime rib night, you may as well weep bitterly for the rest of your life knowing you missed out on the one thing you would have loved more than your kids. However, you can still order mac & cheese, a prime rib Philly, or a blackened halibut sandwich.
I like to order nachos. You see, people can’t resist nachos, so I offer them to everyone at the table and they dive right in there. Then I wait a few minutes and ask to try their meal. Works every time. I wash it down with a martini and whatever else I can get my hands on before I run out of money.
The Station Bar & Grill is locally owned and operated and open year-round
I support local business because I’m a good person. You should support local business and eat at the Station while you’re in Skagway. If not, I have to question your judgment.
