It’s almost time for Skagway tourist season
It seems like only yesterday it was Skagway tourist season. Since then, we Skagway locals have been going to high school ball games, enjoying quiet walks in the woods, and occasionally shoveling snow off of our sidewalks. For seven months out of the year, we live the good life. Well, all of that is almost over.
It all started with seasonal employees returning to town
Sometime in March seasonal employees started rolling back into Skagway. They are good, hard-working people, but they’re often a little too eager to talk. They say things like, “How was your winter?” and even though they’re just being nice, you almost want to slap the tan right off of their face. Now it’s late April and the first cruise ship will dock in less than 10 days. Fortunately, we love tourists and we are far more prepared now than we were back in March.
Getting ready for tourists is a full-time job
Getting ready for the Skagway tourist season requires a lot of hard work. For starters, there is dog poop pretty much all over town. During the winter, dog poop gets covered by snow and everyone forgets about it until the snow melts and the whole town smells like crap. Fortunately, we pick up all of the poop before the cruises start coming because the dogs aren’t going to do it.
Today, we had our annual Clean Sweep, which is a town-wide event where everyone picks up random garbage that blew around all winter. Skagway residents aren’t slobs, but it often gets very windy during the winter. Getting out of your car can cause papers to blow down the street, and even Usain Bolt can’t catch it. He’s that really fast guy, by the way.
Between the poop and garbage, we have little time for anything else. When you step off your cruise ship, you will say, “Wow! What a clean town!”
You’re welcome.
We also have to get everything else ready for the Skagway tourist season
Imagine if you got off the ship and everything was closed. You went to buy some T-shirts at the souvenir shop – CLOSED. You went to get a burger at a local restaurant – CLOSED. You went for a hike on a local trail – CLOSED. You would have a bad vacation and wonder why you spent so much money to visit Alaska if it’s just closed all the time.
Well, worry not because everything will be open. Why? Because we took the time to get ready for the Skagway tourist season. You can buy a t-shirt, eat a burger, and go hiking. We are good at our jobs.
We hope you enjoy the Skagway tourist season
If you’re coming to Skagway this tourist season, we are confident you will enjoy everything we have to offer. From poop-free streets to open restaurants, Skagway has it all!
