How is the camping in Skagway?
Camping is fun. You can sleep under the stars and cook food on a fire. Eating a burger cooked over a campfire is the best. You can also camp by a lake, go fishing, and then eat that fish cooked over a fire. When you’re camping, life is good. You may be wondering, “How is the camping in Skagway?” Well, you’re in luck because that’s what this blog is about.
You can’t just camp anywhere in Alaska
Some people think that Alaska is a wide open place where you can just pitch a tent wherever you like. Hold on there, Chris Columbus. Alaska has rules like anywhere else, but there just aren’t as many. You can go camping just about anywhere in the wilderness, but if you’re in Skagway, you have fewer options. You can’t camp on the roads or in the ball field, and don’t let me catch you camping in my lawn. In Skagway, you need to camp at a campground or one of a few other places. Rules is rules.
Campgrounds are named that for a reason
There are a couple of campgrounds out in Dyea. One is owned by the Park Service and the other is owned by the Municipality of Skagway. If you want to camp at either, you have to pay a small fee. Don’t complain if you’re a cheapskate. Just pay it!
Both campgrounds are nice and have great views of nature. Don’t go chopping down trees for your campfire either. Collect dead wood like you know what you’re doing. Camping in Skagway is fun but you should have a basic understanding of how to camp.
While there aren’t any official campgrounds in the Skagway area (with room), you can sometimes pitch a tent in Seven Pastures. The cops allow this when there’s a softball tournament. I think we should be collecting a fee, but what do I know?
Camping in Skagway – Other places to camp
I see people camping around Lower Dewey Lake sometimes. I guess it’s okay. It sure doesn’t bother me. There are two cabins at Upper Dewey Lake and you can camp up there too. That’s a very nice place. You should camp up there. You’re in the alpine, so you need to carry some wood. If you stay in the cabin, you can bring kerosene and use the heater. That’s not really camping though, you lightweight.
There is also a Caboose at the Denver Glacier trailhead and it’s a very nice place to hang out. You can hike the trail or just hang out in the caboose and drink beer. Whatever works.
As you can see, camping in Skagway is pretty awesome. If you would like to do some camping in Skagway, always remember to put out your fire and be bear aware. That means don’t leave your food outside. You don’t want to end up dead, I can tell you that.
