Skagway train tours – secrets for a better ride

You probably don’t ride on a lot of trains. Why would you? This isn’t the old west. You probably drive your own car everywhere. What this means is that you don’t really know anything about trains, especially ones that were built during the 1800s. 

First of all, the White Pass train is a narrow gauge rail. What does that mean? Most train rail in the United States is standard gauge but narrow gauge is, well, narrower. There are only two narrow gauge railways in the United States, White Pass (duh) and the Durango and Silverton in Colorado. Trains that use narrow gauge rail sway back and forth a little more. That’s okay though because most people barely notice. 

I guess that really wasn’t a tip but more of a fun fact. Here is a tip: Bring your own snacks and beverages. Skagway train tours last a few hours on average and you don’t want to get hangry, now do you? When I ride the train, I like to bring along some crackers, a bottle of iced tea, and a few pieces of fresh sashimi. What can I say, I travel in style.

Another excellent tip is to bring a camera. Nowadays, everyone has a camera on their cell phone and that’s great and all, but you can get far better pictures with an SLR camera. Cell phone photos on the train are rarely any good so save your money for a good camera and get photos that will make your friends back home realize how mundane their lives truly are.
