The Best of Skagway – Hiking Trails
In part two of this exciting new blog series, we are going to take a look at Skagway’s best hiking trails. There isn’t a whole lot to do in Skagway, so people do a lot of hiking. If there was a movie theater or shopping mall, residents would likely hike less. But we don’t. So they do. Anyway, The Best of Skagway series was started so that we could share the many highlights of Skagway with you, dear reader.
The Best of Skagway hiking
A few words of wisdom… Always prepare fully for any hike in Alaska, even a short hike. Skagway’s “trails” always have quotation marks around them because they aren’t like the trails you’re used to back home. There are roots, and mud, and steep slopes that can make you fall down and go boom. You need good shoes and may want to carry bear spray because there are bears in Alaska. You should have water and other stuff. If you’re a novice hiker and want to hike to the summit of a local mountain, reconsider. Our volunteer fire department doesn’t want to spend all afternoon looking for you.
The Best of Skagway – Yakutania Point
While it’s not easy to spell, Yakutania Point is a very easy hike. You walk along the trail and end up on a rocky jetty that everyone calls The Point. It’s pretty and you may see seals or whales. Alaska is like that. You can do a 15-minute hike and see some whales. I like to catch fish out there and then eat them because I’m Alaskan.
The Best of Skagway – Lower and Upper Dewey Lake
Remember that when you hike Lower Dewey Lake trail that it’s the easy one. Upper Dewey is way harder and takes a lot longer. Both are great in different ways. Lower Dewey is a lovely stroll around a lake and Upper Dewey takes you into the alpine with incredible views in all directions. You make the call!
The Best of Skagway – AB Mountain
AB Mountain Trail is hard. Even if you’re a good hiker, it will kick your butt. Every time I hike it I’m sore for days. If you’re not an experienced hiker, don’t do this hike. Make good choices in life and live longer.
The Best of Skagway – Smuggler’s Cove
This is a relatively easy loop trail that takes you to a lovely cove with a stupid name because it was never used for smuggling. I’ve seen otters there and you can have a picnic and a fire if you’re into that kind thing. Clean up after yourself and put out your fire. We don’t like cleaning up after lazy people.
The Best of Skagway – Lost Lake
You probably won’t do this trail because it’s hard to find. Plus, it’s really hard. Forget I mentioned it.
That’s the best of Skagway hiking trails. Be sure to check out next Sunday’s blog about the best of Skagway.
