Are there bees in Skagway?

A cruise ship passenger once asked me if there were bees in Skagway. Why? Because they were allergic to bees. I guess if you’re allergic to bees you need to watch your back everywhere you travel. You could end up in some pro-bee community where stings are a daily occurrence. I read an article about people who enjoy bee stings, so they capture them and force them to sting. That is just nuts. I wouldn’t trust a person like that. Anyway, today’s blog is all about bees in and around Skagway because that tourist asked me that question.

How can you tell the difference between a bee and a hornet?

I have no idea. You should Google that question. I just know that bees are yellow and black and have a stinger. Some hornets do too. Maybe they’re related somehow. I do my best to avoid bees and you probably do too. I’m going to tell you everything I know about Skagway bees in this article, so it’s going to be very short.

I was stung by a bee when I was a kid

When I was about 5, I was out playing in the yard and got stung by a bee. It hurt. I am not allergic, so I didn’t go to the hospital or die. I didn’t cry either because my mother said I was a big boy and put a band-aid on it. I remember watching the bee sting me because I liked bugs and had no idea what was happening. When I went back outside, the bee was writhing around dying on the ground with a giant hole in its butt and I felt bad for it. I don’t hold a grudge.

Two years ago, I had a disturbing bee encounter

I was fishing in the Yukon about 65 miles north of Skagway. I caught a big trout and laid it on the shore. Then an eagle appeared out of nowhere and tried to steal the trout. I ran over to picked up my trout off of the ground and saw that it was covered in bees. I mean like 100 bees. It looked like they were drinking the trout’s blood. Now, I don’t really know anything about bees, but I had no idea they drink blood. I’ve been fishing my whole life and never once saw bees drinking fish blood.

The eagle was fast approaching and I like eating fish, so I grabbed the trout and started running away while shaking it vigorously in the air, hoping the bees would fall off. Then another eagle appeared from the other direction. That eagle attacked the first eagle and there were bees everywhere. I was screaming like some wild lunatic that’s spent too much time in the bush. Then I saw a person filming me with their cell phone.

That’s embarrassing.
