Tours don’t have to take up your whole day. In fact, many people prefer to take a short shore excursion so they can spend the rest of their day sightseeing, hanging out in a local bar, or lounging in the hot tub back on their ship. Today’s blog is going to feature 5 short Skagway shore excursions that won’t make you say, “Is this tour over YET?”

What exactly is “short?”

When it comes to Skagway shore excursions, what exactly constitutes “short?” Nobody actually knew the answer to this question until the federal government spent $3.2 million on a 1986 study to identify the maximum length for a “short” shore excursion. What did they discover? Well, there were two conflicting points of view, but after an arm wrestling match to determine the winner, it was decided that the maximum length for a short tour was 2 hours. So we are going to go with that.

Skagway Street Car Tour

This short Skagway shore excursion is only 90 minutes long. That’s shorter than some episodes of Game of Thrones. The tour features The Skagway Story Program which was featured on A&E. You also get to ride in an old-timey bus that looks cool and makes for nice photos. You will learn all about Skagway, drive down Broadway, and stop at the Gold Rush Cemetery. You also stop and get out at the town overlook and then you’re done. Red Onion Saloon, here we come!

Ocean Raft Wildlife Adventure

You don’t have to go on some long tour to do something exciting and adventurous. This short Skagway shore excursion is 2 hours long, which qualifies as a short tour by those arm wrestling science nerds. You get to ride in a high-speed ocean raft, which is really more like a boat. They give you these cool suits to wear so you stay warm and dry, plus you look like an astronaut. You will also see some sea life, like seals and otters, and who-knows-what-else.

To the Summit

This short Skagway shore excursion takes you… uh… to the summit. What is a summit, you ask? Well, it’s the spot on the Klondike Highway that reaches the highest elevation. People like to go there because there is a neat sign that says “Welcome to Alaska,” great views, and it’s very historical. The tour is 90 minutes long and you make a couple more stops at pretty places. One of them is a waterfall. People like waterfalls.

Private Tour

You can take a two-hour private tour and do whatever you want. You can just have the driver take you around and show you some stuff, or you can sit in the parking lot for two hours talking about your favorite movies. It’s a private tour, so the world is your oyster.

Ghosts and Goodtime Girls Walking Tour

This short Skagway shore excursion is two hours long, but don’t worry because you don’t have to walk the whole time. You stroll through town with a Red Onion “madam” and learn all about Skagway’s Gold Rush seedy underbelly. Then you tour the Brothel Museum at the Red Onion Saloon. When you’re done, you get an adult beverage which is like a reward for good behavior. Congratulations! You did it. Here is some hooch.
