Skagway Restaurant Reviews
Part 2 – Skagway Fish Co.
When tourists come into our tour booth in the morning, they often make jokes about how much they’re eating on the cruise ship. We will tell them that their tour comes with lunch and they will say something like, “I don’t even need lunch because all we do on the ship is eat!”
Three hours later they walk back into the tour booth and ask, “Is there anywhere you recommend for lunch?” Yes, there is no escaping hunger. Even if you’re shoving food in your face the entire time you’re on the ship, you’re still going to get hungry. That’s how our bodies work, and it’s why plus-size clothing exists.
“So where do the locals eat?”
As locals, we like to eat a variety of foods, so before making a recommendation it helps to know what kind of food you like. Many people respond to this query by saying, “I want some local seafood.” Well, if it’s local seafood you’re after, you’re totally in luck because there’s a great local seafood restaurant right up the street!
Skagway Fish Company – Alaska seafood cooked the right way
The Skagway Fish Company is locally owned and operated. While the owners have questionable taste in NFL teams, they do know how to run a quality restaurant. Let’s review some of their more popular menu items so that you can start planning your meal.
Halibut fish and chips – Only bad people hate fish and chips, and halibut is arguably the best quality fish you can use to make these succulent morsels. The batter at Skagway Fish Co. is delicate so that you can still taste the sweetness of the halibut. I like my fish and chips dipped in tartar sauce because that’s how it’s done.
Oysters on the half shell – Raw oysters are the best thing in the world. If you disagree, we cannot be friends. These fresh oysters come from Prince of Wales Island, which sounds like it’s in Canada but is actually part of Alaska. Add a twist of lemon juice, a little hot sauce, and then suck them down. Oh man, now I’m getting hungry.
Mermaid burger – The Fish Company’s mermaid burger is not a burger, nor is it made from a real-life mermaid. It is a chunk of grilled halibut served on a bun with all the trimmings. I recommend ordering the “hippy mermaid,” which features blackened halibut, cheese, and bacon.
Fresh Alaskan salmon – If you eat dinner at Fish Company, you will have the opportunity to order some real Alaskan salmon dishes from the menu. Wild Alaskan salmon is great tasting and good for you. Ask your waiter if they have fresh sockeye salmon. If so, order that and thank me later.
Alaskan king crab – You need to eat some of this while you’re in Alaska or your friends back home will make fun of you. King Crab can grow over 25 pounds, which sounds like a nightmare until you’re eating their sweet and delicate meat. Dip in in drawn butter and weep bitterly knowing that you’ll never eat anything as delicious ever again.
What about the beer and wine?!
Hey there, simmer down. Yes, the Skagway Fish Co. has a fine selection of cold draft and bottled beer and an impressive wine list. Eating raw oysters without beer is a crime in Alaska, so don’t end up in jail for making such a dumb mistake. Order a brew made by the Alaskan brewery in Juneau, and if you see a tour salesperson at the bar, buy them a drink too! I guarantee you, they earned it.
Well, that’s about it. The restaurant has some cool looking t-shirts that make nice gifts for people back home that you actually like. There is also an outdoor deck with some of the best views in all of Southeast Alaska. If it’s a warm day, be sure to get there early to claim your spot. If some irritating person in your group hates seafood and you can’t just ditch them downtown, fear not. The Fish Company has a wide selection of food for landlubbers, including a steak sandwich, ribs, and a quality ribeye steak. Vegetarians and vegans in your group are completely out of luck.
